Wendy Williams To Headline Stand-Up Comedy Special; Fox to Develop Animated Sitcom “Saloon”

Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) September 4, 2019 – ON THIS DAY “Gilligan’s Island” officially concluded its three-season run on CBS in 1967. A total of 98 episodes were produced…In 1992, three broadcasters — CBS, NBC and PBS — banded together to present the documentary “Scared Silent: Exposing and Ending Child Abuse. Hosted by Oprah Winfrey, it opened with a disclaimer, warning of the graphic nature of the program…Kelly Clarkson was crowned the winner of Fox’s “American Idol” in the first season finale in 2002…Celebrity Birthdays: “The Neighborhood” star Max Greenfield is 39; Beyoncé is 38.

Did You Know?:
CBS had originally renewed “Gilligan’s Island” for a fourth season, but when the network reversed its decision on canceling western “Gunsmoke” the goofy sitcom was axed to make room. “Gunsmoke” at the time was 12 years old and ultimately ran for another eight seasons. “Gilligan’s Island,” meanwhile, returned for three television movies: “Rescue From Gilligan’s Island” in 1978, “The Castaways on Gilligan’s Island” in 1979, and “The Harlem Globetrotters on “Gilligan’s Island” in 1981. There was also two animated spin-off series: “The New Adventures of Gilligan” from 1974 to 1977 and “Gilligan’s Planet” from 1982 to 1983.

Ratings Breakdown:
NBC summer juggernaut “America’s Got Talent” remained just that, with a 6.3 rating/11 share in the household overnights from 8-10 p.m. ET. Comparably, that bested already renewed “Bachelor in Paradise” on ABC (3.3/ 6) by a hefty 91 percent.

Fox to Develop Animated Comedy “Saloon”
Fox is developing an animated series titled “Saloon” from Elliott Kalan and Jenny Jaffe that is set in the frontier outpost of Timmy’s Town. The logline: A woman named Kevin runs the local saloon, McClanahan’s, where she functions as the townspeople’s unofficial leader/therapist/protector. At the other side of Timmy’s Town is a do-gooder male sheriff named Stacey Leslie whose only mission is to close Kevin’s “sinful” bar and run her out of town for good.

Kalan and Jaffe will both write and executive produce, with Gail Berman also executive producing via SideCar. Fox Entertainment and SideCar will produce.

Netflix Announces Original Belgium Series “Into the Night”
Netflix will introduce its first series from Belgium, drama “Into the Night,” in 2020. The six-part series, directed by Inti Calfat and Dirk Verheye (“Over Water”) and produced by Entre Chien et Loup, tells the story about retaining humanity in the face of a cosmic disaster, as a flight departs Brussels.

The series will feature an international cast from Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia, and Turkey.

The logline: “Into the Night” begins with a sudden solar event, as the sun inexplicably starts killing everything in its path. The show centers around the ‘lucky’ passengers and crew of an overnight flight out of Brussels, as they attempt to fly west – into the safety of the dark night. The plane’s manifest is multinational and multilingual, with passengers rich and poor, young and old, civilian and military. The seemingly ordinary travelers share but one thing: A desire to survive the sun – and each other – by any means necessary.

Wendy Williams to Tackle Stand-Up Comedy Special
Wendy Williams has partnered with “50 Central” producer Back Roads Entertainment on a stand-up comedy special that will be pitched to networks and streaming platforms. Titled “Wendy Williams & Friends Presents: For the Record,”  Williams will be joined by comedians including Royale Watkins, Carmen Barton, Mark Viera and newcomer Kristen Sivills as they perform stand-up.Co-produced by Back Roads Entertainment and LostNThought Productions, the show will be exec produced by Williams alongside Watkins, Bernie Young, LostNThought’s Courtney Parker, and Back Roads duo Colby Gaines and Jonathan Cane.

Korean drama “When the Camellia Blooms” will launch globally on Netflix on Wednesday, September 18. The logline: The series features thea story of Dongbaek (Gong Hyo-jin), an orphan who grew up to become a single mom. She owns a small bar, also called ‘Dongbaek’ which means camellia in English. Her life takes a new turn after meeting Yongsik, a do-gooder police officer in their small town. They fall in love despite social stigma against single parenthood. Yongsik, having been raised by a single mom himself, understands Dongbaek’s challenges and embraces her dearly.

“Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal, a new prehistoric animated series, will launch with a five-night event beginning Monday, October 7 at 12 a.m. ET on Adult Swim. From the creator behind “Samurai Jack” comes a new tale that follows a caveman at the dawn of evolution as he forms an unlikely friendship with an almost extinct dinosaur. The series tells the story of two unlikely allies as they navigate through a treacherous world. After bonding over unfortunate tragedies, they seem to become each other’s only hope of survival against a common enemy.

Season 10 of Discovery’s veteran “Gold Rush” will open on Friday, October 11 at 9 p.m. ET. The new season starts with a major crisis in the Klondike. The water permits have failed to come through. And it happens at the worst time. The price of gold is spiking, sparking a new rush of prospectors to the area. Each miner is forced to take massive gambles to strike it rich as they hunt for gold on new grounds.

SVOD service True Royalty TV has commissioned a new documentary,“Meghan for President?, exploring the global appeal and power of the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle. The special will include interviews with celebrities, media and Royals experts about the growing influence of this strong-willed American who now has the world’s attention as a new member of the British Royal Family. How far will she take her new-found political and socio-economic power, and is there any truth to the persistent rumors surrounding Meghan’s desire to run for political office? The documentary is slated to premiere on True Royalty TV in 4Q 2019.
