-Percent Change from the Year-Ago Evening:
NBC: +39, CBS: + 6, ABC: no change, CW: -33
An encore telecast of granddaddy “60 Minutes” (5.3 rating/11 share at 7 p.m.) led CBS to household overnight victory on this pre-holiday Sunday. But it is summer mainstay “Big Brother” (#1: 3.2/ 7 from 8-9 p.m.) that will likely lead the network to leadership in adults 18-49 and all the key young adult demo groups. Comparably, “Big Brother” was equal to year-ago overnight levels.
In season-finale news, freshman CBS drama “Instinct” topped the 9 p.m. hour with a 3.2/ 6 in households and will return in 2018-19 in midseason. For the remainder of the analysis and the breakdown by network and half-hour for Sunday, July 1, click here
NBC Cancels Freshman Comedy “Champions”
NBC, not surprisingly, has announced the official cancellation of freshman comedy “Champions.” At the time of its upfront presentation in mid-May, the network had said it was undecided on the futures of “Champions” and sophomore time-traveling drama “Timeless.” Both have now been axed.
Debuting on March 8, 2018, “Champions” told the story of Vince (Anders Holm), a charismatic gym owner, living every bachelor’s dream with his younger brother Matthew (Andy Favreau) in Brooklyn, New York. He lives a simple life, dates an endless string of women, until his high school fling Priya (Mindy Kaling) drops off their 15-year-old son Michael (J.J. Totah) .
Sources say the SVOD partner, Netflix, passed on picking up the family comedy for a second season, but will continue to carry the show internationally after its June 12 streaming debut. Producers Universal Television, where Kaling is under an overall deal, are said to be in discussions to find a new home for “Champions.” It’s unclear if Hulu, which rescued Kaling’s “The Mindy Project,” has in-season stacking rights to the comedy starring Anders Holm, is among the destinations being discussed for the series.
Military Drama “Six” Concludes on History
History has opted against a third season of scripted military drama “Six.” Debuting on Jan. 18, 2017, “Six” chronicled the operations and daily lives of operators who are part of the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU), more commonly known as SEAL Team Six, which is one of the U.S. Armed Forces’ primary counter-terrorism units. “Six” hailed from A+E Studios and the former Weinstein TV unit. Goggins, and it Barry Sloane and Olivia Munn starred. A total of 17 episodes were produced.
