His Royal Highness Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, saw first-hand this week the efforts by the government of Viet Nam and animal protection organisation Humane Society International to inspire Viet Nam’s school children to protect rhinos from devastating poaching by reducing demand for rhino horn.
In an event featuring school children from the Hong Ha primary school in Hanoi, Prince William spoke about the need to protect rhinos from poaching and urge the public to shun rhino horn consumption. HSI wildlife Program Manager Adam Peyman read children the book called “I’m a Little Rhino,” written and produced jointly by the Viet Nam CITES Management Authority and HSI, and illustrated by Peyman, to teach children about rhino poaching concerns, conservation efforts and to dispel the myth that rhino horn has medicinal value.
Prince William is in Viet Nam to attend the Hanoi Conference on Illegal Wildlife Trade, a conference in which participants will call for tangible and unified action against illegal wildlife trade. A week earlier, HSI funded an event in which Viet Nam government officials destroyed 2,177.5 kg of elephant ivory tusks and 70.1 kg of rhinoceros horns confiscated from the illegal trade, to permanently remove the products from trade, call public attention to the poaching and trafficking tragedy, and urge people not to buy or use elephant ivory or rhino horn. A rhino is killed for its horn every 10 hours in South Africa, largely to satisfy demand in Viet Nam.
Teresa Telecky, Ph.D., director of HSI’s wildlife department and author of “I’m a Little Rhino,” said: “We are thrilled that Prince William is helping to bring attention to the plight of rhinos and the dire poaching crisis they face, which is decimating their wild populations in Africa and Asia. Driving the crisis is the demand for rhino horn for its use in traditional medicines and health tonics despite the horn having no medicinal value. Our “I’m a Little Rhino” book educates children about rhinos and the threats to their survival and encourages them to ask adults in their lives not to buy or consume rhino horn.”
HSI has been working with the government of Viet Nam since 2013 on a national, government-led campaign to reduce demand for rhino horn in the country. Viet Nam is one of the world’s major transit points for and consumers of trafficked ivory and horn. The multi-faceted campaign has reached an estimated 34 million people — approximately one-third of the national population. According to national poll results, over the three years of the campaign, the demand for rhino horn has dropped by 38 percent and the number of people in Viet Nam who think rhino horn has medical value has decreased by 25 percent.
One of the campaign’s main priorities is educating children, and “I’m a Little Rhino” is at the heart of the program. The book tells the story from the perspective of a little rhino affected by poaching, and teaches children that poaching is a crime, that the horns have no medicinal properties, and that wildlife must be valued and protected. The book has now been distributed to 700 primary schools and is formally part of the school curriculum.
“I’m a Little Rhino” is the first book in HSI’s “I’m a Little…” series of children’s books and videos, produced through our partnership with the Vietnamese government. Other books include I’m a Little Elephant, I’m a Little Pangolin, and “I’m a Little Tiger” to reduce demand for products from these animals.
In addition to the schools education project, the demand reduction campaign has focused on Viet Nam’s capital city, Ha Noi, and engaged stakeholder groups including the 800,000-member Ha Noi Women’s Association, the business and scientific community, university students, as well as leading health experts. The organisation launched advertisements on city centre and airport billboards and on city busses.
Dan Reynolds, lead singer of the Grammy award-winning rock band Imagine Dragons, is partnering with the Spondylitis Association of America and Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation to launch This AS Life Live!, the first interactive talk show for patients with AS by patients with AS.
This AS Life Live! aims to increase awareness of AS, the impact it can have on people and the importance of appropriate disease management.
“When I started to have symptoms of AS, my band was just beginning to take off and I was newly married. From the outside, everything was going great for me, but what many people didn’t know was that I was often in severe pain that left me unable to sleep at night or move around on stage – something that was very unlike me,” said Reynolds. “Because it doesn’t exhibit any external signs or symptoms, AS truly is an invisible disease. It nearly took away many of my life’s biggest joys, like holding my child and performing live on stage.”
AS is a chronic inflammatory condition that can lead to severe pain and discomfort.1 Reynolds was diagnosed with AS at age 20 when a family member recognized his symptoms and advised him to see a doctor. He has been living with AS and managing his symptoms for nearly ten years, and is the third member of his family to be diagnosed with the disease.
“I am stoked to be a part of this new series, and help bring the realities of the AS patient experience to life. The challenges I have faced are what drive my passion to discuss my experiences and be a part of the larger AS patient community,” said Reynolds. “I hope that This AS Life Live! will provide much-needed information and support to patients and their caregivers.”
Each episode of the series will feature Reynolds interviewing a different patient, focusing on a unique aspect of their daily life with AS, such as exercise, relationships, the workplace and physician visits. Episodes of This AS Life Live! will air on ThisASLife.com – a vibrant, online global community that provides a supportive environment for patients. In addition to the episodes, the website offers:

· Lifestyle management tips written by AS patients and expert rheumatologists from around the world to help more patients stay healthy with their disease

In the United States, more than one million people are impacted by the disease. AS usually begins in patients between the ages of 20 and 30, but can occur as late as 40 to 50. In the most advanced AS cases, the inflammation of the spinal joints causes the spine to fuse in a fixed, immobile position, sometimes creating a stooped posture.

“As women, there is a bond we all share,” Amal Clooney told a sold-out audience at the 17th Annual Texas Conference for Women at the Austin Convention Center. “It’s not a bond of geography or culture, but of shared experience. There are struggles that only women face. The worst thing we can do as women is not stand up for each other. [But] if we are united, if we keep up the fight for each other’s rights, there is no limit to what we can do.”
Clooney, a British human rights lawyer, has appeared before the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court, the European Court of Human Rights and various courts in the United Kingdom and the United States and she has held a number of posts within the United Nations. Most recently, she has begun a case against ISIS on behalf of Nobel Peace Prize nominee Nadia Murad, a young Yazidi woman who escaped capture and sexual enslavement by ISIS.

This week, Taboo released a new track called The Fight on iTunes and other online music stores and performed it on the Emmy Award-winning syndicated series, The Doctors. The song is an anthem of survivorship that was inspired by Taboo’s personal experience facing testicular cancer, which he announced publicly for the first time today on The Doctors. To help create a world free from the pain and suffering caused by cancer, Taboo will donate proceeds from each download to the American Cancer Society. These funds will be used to support cancer research, prevention and early detection efforts, and patient service programs.
Taboo was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2014. After experiencing debilitating pain throughout his body following a performance, he checked into an emergency room. It was there that he ultimately received a stage 2 cancer diagnosis. Taboo underwent surgery and a rigorous regimen of chemotherapy five days a week for 12 weeks. In 2015 he was declared in remission. Since then he has recommitted to healthy living and fitness, including working out daily, dancing, and playing sports with his kids.
“To the millions of survivors and caregivers out there who are either facing this disease or adjusting to life after cancer, I want you to know: I’m in the trenches with you. And the American Cancer Society is too,” says Taboo. “I’m so proud to release The Fight because it’s truly an anthem of survivorship. I want to use this song and my story to inspire and motivate people all over the world to live their best, healthiest lives possible.”
“And I want the world to know that it’s possible to face cancer and emerge stronger on the other side,” Taboo adds. “Just look at me.”
In May, 2016 Taboo became a global ambassador for the ACS, using his voice to inspire a movement to live healthy and to raise funds to fight cancer. Once making the decision to partner with the ACS, Taboo embarked on a summer-long journey to better understand the depth and breadth of the organization’s work. He toured the National Cancer Information Center in Austin, TX, where Trained Cancer Information Specialists are on-hand to provide free information 24 hours a day seven days a week, and visited patients at the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge Atlanta, a free lodging facility for cancer patients who must travel far from home for treatment. The limited edition 2017 Hear the World calendar is available for $40 USD today. One hundred percent of the proceeds benefit the Hear the World Foundation, a non-profit that aids disadvantaged people, particularly children, with hearing loss.
According to the World Health Organization, over 360 million people (5% of the world’s population) and an estimated 32 million children are affected by disabling hearing loss. In the U.S., two to three of every 1,000 children born have a detectable level of hearing loss in one or both ears. Most of the people with hearing loss live in low to middle income countries and often don’t have access to ear medical care.
Founded in 2006, the Hear the World Foundation (#heartheworld) has given thousands of people with hearing loss the chance of a better life. It focuses particularly on projects for children with hearing loss, to enable them to develop at an appropriate rate for their age. The foundation, which has supported over 80 projects on all five continents, provides financial resources, donates hearing aids and audiological accessories, and trains project workers in audiology on site.
