Beverly Hills, CA (The Hollywood Times) 1/24/13 – “I respect the past, but I don’t revere it,” was the response from Robert Iger, Chairman and CEO of the Disney Company during a panel discussion at the Hollywood Radio & Television Society’s annual luncheon. Held at the Beverly Hilton, ”A Conversation With Robert Iger” luncheon was held on January 23rd, 2013 and moderated by television producer Brian Grazer.
Robert Iger, the infamous negotiator of Pixar, Lucas Films, and Marvel entertainment for The Walt Disney Company discussed the Golden Age as well as addressing violence in video games and the media. Regarding the Golden Age of television he stated, “”It’s a golden age of TV for the consumer, because there’s never been more of it, more choice,” and feels the choices are high quality. He also discussed competition, but finds “If you’re obsessed with what everyone is doing then you’re not obsessed with what you’re doing.”
The newest and presumably hardest challenge is how to best serve the advertisers with the expanding platforms. There are so many ways to view programming these days that they are having to focus on keeping advertisers fulfilled and collecting ad revenue when viewers are able to watch programming on their iPhones and tablets. As for the issue of violence, well, it’s Disney, after all. Iger told the audience although Disney doesn’t have much violent content, he does want to be a part of the conversation. Strangely enough, floating about the Beverly Hilton ballroom at the event was 6 foot 4 actor, Knight Rider and Bay Watch star, David Hasselhoff. He could be spotted in any crowd, as he still looks great. When I asked him what he was doing at the event, he indicated that he wanted to hear the State of The Industry address. Mr. Hasselhoff indicated that he believed “that one must ride the wave, and eventually get off the wave turn back into it and find out what is current and get back on the next one.” He chuckled as his analogy was directed at his 90’s hit show Baywatch, when he played a lifeguard. He mentioned his concerns about unscripted reality shows and the internet craze, but was present to see what he could learn about the future of film and television.
