ON THIS DAY
The music extravaganza “Your Hit Parade” was upgraded from radio to television on NBC in 1959, and stayed on the network through June 1958. CBS picked it up for the 1958-59 season and revived it briefly in the summer of 1974…Summer variety hour “The Gladys Knight & The Pips Show” debuted on NBC in 1975. It aired for just four weeks…Cable’s Food Network added the Japanese cooking competition series “Iron Chef” to its lineup in 1999…Celebrity Birthdays: “Shark Tank’s” Kevin O’Leary is 64; Two time Oscar winner Tom Hanks is 62; rock singer Courtney Love is 55; “The Wonder Years” star Fred Savage is 43.-Did You Know?: Fred Savage’s first TV appearance was at age nine in a short-lived CBS drama called “Morningstar/Eveningstar.” His current series, “Child Support,” which he hosts, will air in the Friday 9 p.m. ET hour this fall (out of sitcoms “Fresh Off the Boat” and “Speechless”).
Percent Change From the Year-Ago Evening:
NBC: +17, Fox: no change, CBS: – 3, ABC: – 6
CBS topped the household overnights on this second Sunday in July, besting No. 2 ABC by three-tenths of a rating point (or 10 percent). Both networks could be neck and neck for dominance in adults 18-49 considering three-quarters of the Eye net’s line-up was in repeats.
In the 8-9 p.m. ET battle of “Celebrity Family Feud” on ABC versus “Big Brother” on CBS, the Steve Harvey-hosted game show had the overnight advantage with a 4.0 rating/7 share versus a 3.5/ 6 for “Big Brother.” My pick to go the distance on this new season of “Big Brother”: surfer dude Tyler.
